Vision & Mission

What is water baptism?

It is the natural next step after making Jesus the Lord of your life. Christianity was never meant to be done in private, it has always been a public faith, and baptism is the act of declaring on the outside, a decision you have made on the inside. Take your next step of obedience in following Jesus and sign-up today.

WaTER BAPTISM

Cornerstone Pentecostal Church, originally known as Yellowknife Pentecostal Tabernacle, was established in 1958 by Pastor G. Veale as a ministry of the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada (PAOC). For 17 years the combination church and parsonage on 49th Street served well.

Then, in 1975, when a larger space was needed, an agreement was reached with the United Church of Canada to move their existing building onto a basement foundation neighbouring the existing Yellowknife Pentecostal Tabernacle. This construction was overseen by Reverend G. Gibbs, and subsequently the beautiful United Church building was moved from its original location on 54th Street to its new location on 49th Street. This challenging move was accomplished by Mix the Mover (Edmonton, Alberta) - no small feat! In 1977 the ‘new’ Yellowknife Pentecostal Tabernacle was dedicated, where it continued to serve as a sanctuary and an outreach to the Yellowknife community and beyond, supporting in part a number of Pentecostal Missions throughout the NWT.

By the early 2000’s it became apparent that the aging building (including the adjoining original 1958 structure) needed a large amount of capital to remain viable. In addition, in its downtown Yellowknife location, parking was becoming evermore challenging.  Thus, after prayerful consideration, the decision was taken to build in a new location: 118 Haener Drive in the newly expanding Niven Lake subdivision.

OUR History

Reverend Chris Watkins oversaw the major project of building and relocating, and in June, 2008, the new facility was dedicated to the glory of God. A short time later, while continuing to be associated with the PAOC, the church was renamed Cornerstone Pentecostal Church. Currently the church with its welcoming signage is visible from the highway leading out of the city.

While leadership responsibility has been shared by a number of dedicated pastors throughout its existence, Cornerstone Pentecostal Church has remained constant in its vision and mission. Over the years, families have grown, friendships have formed and flourished, and lives have been transformed by the power of faith in Jesus Christ. Cornerstone has been an integral part of Yellowknife and the Northwest Territories, sharing the Good News of God’s love through worship, service, and love.

James and Karina Clarence pastored in Calgary, Alberta at First Assembly Church for 11 years. They have two daughters, Kendrick and Lennon and a son named Whitaker

Now, they join the Cornerstone Team as the Lead Pastors. James loves the Oilers, skiing & golf! Karina loves interior design, painting and going to the gym. But, more than those things, they love people deeply. Their family is committed to the cause of the local church, by extending God’s kingdom, and they are passionate about mining out all the gold in God’s people. They believe with all their hearts that God has a plan for the church in Canada & they’ve given their life to see a move of God come again to our nation.

They are not shy, so come say hi and let’s be friends!
